Born: May 11, 1904, Figueres, Catalonia, Spain Died: January 23, 1989
Dali, Classified as a surrealist, worked in the medium of painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, drawing and printmaking. He was known for unusual and grandiose behavior, which irked those around him who loved his art as much as it annoyed his critics. His eccentric manner sometimes drew more attention than his artwork. Dalí grew a moustache, influenced by seventeenth-century Spanish master painter Diego Velázquez. The moustache became an iconic trademark of his appearance for the rest of his life and into present day. In 1931, Dalí painted one of his most famous works, The Persistence of Memory, which introduced a surrealistic image of soft, melting pocket watches. Dali's first introduction to the American art market was by art dealer Julian Levy in 1934.
