Reinhardt was an Abstract painter who took painting classes while on a full scholarship at Columbia University and later studying at the New York Institute of Fine Art. He is regarded as the maverick member of the Abstract Expressionist generation. Reinhardt's idea of abstract was always resolutely geometric and hard-edged. He is best known for his black on black paintings and several newspaper cartoons.
