Damien Hirst

Born: June 7, 1965, Bristol, England
Lives and works in Devon, England

Damien Hirst is an English artist and the prominent member of the group called the Young British Artists, or YBAs, which developed in Britain in the early 1990s.
Hirst’s work includes installation, conceptual art and paintings. His first solo exhibition was at the Woodstock Street Gallery in 1991, where he filled the gallery with hundreds of live tropical butterflies, some of which hatched from the monochrome canvases that hung the walls. In 1992, he was part of the groundbreaking Young British Artists exhibition at the Saatchi Gallery. In this show, he exhibited his now famous Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living, a tiger shark in a glass tank of formaldehyde. His paintings are typically of two types, known as Spot paintings or Spin paintings. The Spot paintings are arrangements of spots of color that are titled referring to pharmaceutical chemicals. The Spin paintings are created by placing the canvas on a spinner and the paint being poured over as they are set in motion. Hirst often employs assistants in many of his works, which has often brought about criticism questioning his methods. Widely known for by-passing his galleries, and auctioning a complete show of his work at Sotheby’s in 2008, Hirst surpassed auction records for a one-artist auction ($198 million) as well as his own record for a single piece (The Golden Calf, an animal with 18-carat gold horns and hooves, preserved in formaldehyde). In 1995 Hirst was awarded the Turner Prize. He was named Britain’s wealthiest living artist in 2010.
