Chagall was was a Russian born French artist who was one of the most successful artists of the 20th century. He worked in the mediums of painting, book illustrations, stained glass, stage sets, ceramics, tapestries and fine art prints. He is considered one of the greatest jewish artists of all time. As a pioneer of modernism and one of the greatest figurative artists of the 20th century, Marc Chagall achieved fame and fortune, and over the course of a long career created some of the best-known paintings of our time. Picasso was quoted as saying, " when Matisse dies, Chagall will be the only painter left who understands color".
When Chagall returned to Paris from one of his trips, Vollard commissioned him to illustrate the Old Testament version of the Bible. In 1963 Chagall was commissioned to paint the new ceiling for the Paris Opera, a majestic 19th-century building and national monument, Andre Malraux. Other subjects in Chagall's work were life memories, fantasy and Jewish themes.
