2- Would I be better off sending my work to an auction house to sell?
As both the buyer and seller, this is certainly a decision worth considering.
As the seller: An auction house is will consider a reserve. This price will be set prior to delivery of the work. Delivery and shipping is a cost incurred by the seller. If a reserve is not met, the work of is pulled from the auction and return shipping is billed at the expense of the seller. Further, if a work of art does not meet reserve, in the international market place could be black listed, as a work that did not sell.
As the Buyer: The reserve price has predetermined the amount you will pay for a work of art. Beyond the reserve a buyers premium is added to the purchase price. The amount is a standard 20%. The amount realized is most often based on emotions created in the hype and the stress of the moment.. This usually means that you have paid far beyond the anticipated price.
